.asx video unplayableNot sure if this is in the right section & it's not even a environment issue but hoping someone can help.
I took a video of my (now dead) dog on my Vivitar digital camera & it won't download onto my PC. Stlll photos download & are erased automatically but the video just stays on the camera - when I try to play it with the camera plugged in it's OK but if I save it it's got an .asx suffix & can't be read

Do you use media player to usually play your video's?
It could be that you need to associate .asx with media player. Try right clicking the file and choose open with. Find media player and see if it works.
All I can suggest without having the file

I missed this thread before, sorry.
asx isn't a video file type, it's more like an mpu, it's like a playlist for video files. so downloading the asx file won't do you any good, cos when you try and play it back the computer is going to look for a redirect which isn't there. it's late now, I'm going to bed, but if you still need I'll tell you how to pull the actuall video file itself, and play or convert or whatever as needed

That would be great - I figured out that it's just an information type file but it's still stuck on my camera so any advice would be most welcome.

well a couple Q's I need to ask first.
when you recorded the vid did it save it to camera's on board memory or a mem card? and connected to that, how are you accessing the files to pull them onto the computer??(prog that came with the camera, removable drive through My Computer etc)
last, download the asx file to your comp, right click and select properties, and does it have anything written in after 'Location' under the General tab??(< do that with the camera/card still plugged in)
hopefully it'll show you the location of the file, and you can use windows to take you straight there and copy/paste it wherever you like. hopefully.

It's on the memory card and to pull down pics I use the programme that came with the camera but the vid won't come off. Right clicking the file its location is in MyDocuments/My Videos but it's still only 630 bytes size and 6kb on the disc. If I remember rightly I can play the video when the camera's plugged in as the pc accesses it there. Will try looking at location while it's plugged in.
thanks
