"formula" for an alternative to baby wipes?

Hello all,

I currently use real nappies on my babies, mainly to save money lol! Anyway, instead of baby wipes I use their old burp cloths as wipes and am currently using an old spray bottle with a full bottle (250ml) tap water : 2 drops tea tree oil. I was wondering if anybody has a better "recipie" for a skin cleanser for their wee bottoms? Am a bit worried about the astringent properties of tea tree oil on such delicate skin (not that delicate, they are 16 months old now!). Should I be putting vit E in there also or something?

Many thanks for any advice - just kinda making all this up as I go along (tends to be a habbit when you have twins lol!).

Edited for shocking spelling....

I just used good old soap and water most of the time

My Mum and I used to hang their bums over the edge of the wash basin and just slosh warm water onto them. It works for even the tiniest baby and is quite thorough.
Don't you think that modern mums get brainwashed into believing that they need all these products etc. when all they have to do is use their own good sense?
Good for you using the terry's, I always did - I think it must be outrageously expensive keeping them in disposables, I don't know how some folks afford it.

We do use a mix of both, real nappies & disposables (disposables overnight or when out). Didn't bother with real nappies for the first six months as were too exhausted to even think about extra washing lol!

Trouble is, when I am cleaning them during a nappy change, it isn't practical for me to get up and go wash one of them at the sink. When I leave the room for more than two seconds the other one is either up nearly on top of the fireguard or just about to fall over the back of the sofa!! That is why I have been making up a solution to use with their old burp cloths as wipes, just wasn't sure if I should be trying to mix something moisturising in there to guard against the drying effects of the tea tree oil?

Thanks for the replies so far - reassuring to know that other kids have survived just being washed with council pop (water) lol!

I reckon with twins to manage you could be excused doing a few things for convenience anyway, it must be a lot of work.
how about diluting babylotion in water and putting it in a trigger pack? It would be nice and comforting to use as a cleanser. You could put an appeal on the emporium for old towels which you could tear into squares for wipes and wash them with the nappies.
Actually, I have a roll of towelling which I was given. If you would find them useful I will make you a few and hem them. It is white with blue roses on it (I think it's a bit ugly but it would get you started). Also, they sell value face cloths at Tesco for 20p each and they are just plain white.
If you have any knowledge of the different types of reusable nappies on the market my daughter Niki would be most obliged as she is about to buy some. Like you, she wants to use them in the house and have disposables when she goes out anywhere. I'm getting quite excited because she is due in a few weeks and I'm her birthing partner

Julie, I wrote a guide to cloth nappies for our local Homestart project. It doesn't cover every single type on the market, that would be an impossibility, but it does have a lot of info about the most commonly available ones and the different nappy systems ie pocket nappies etc.

If you'd like me to email you a copy (word document) pm me your email address and I'll send it to you.

Twinmum, why not use washable wipes/facecloths and just fill a bowl with warm water to use each time. Take the bowl to where you are changing the nappy. That's what I do and it works fine - I've not got twins though, just a 4 year old, a 2 year old and a wee baby. I've tried a variety of potions to clean my various babies bums but found that plain water works just fine and doesn't set up any irritation.

Thank you Islander + Julie! Great tips! Most appreciated. Bad day today - they are such climbers at the moment.

Julie, very exciting about your daughter, good luck on being a birthing partner, what a wonderful experience! Best wishes for a safe delivery xx

I have some newborn size prefolds & wraps you would be most welcome to try out? Also, I could lend you one of my home made nappies & wraps if you want to copy the pattern? I just used old towels, you can get 2-4 nappies from a bath sheet and use the cut offs for boosters/wipes?
Julie

Thankyou Islander, that would be great. I can make her a few nappies in some of the flowery toweling - at least they are blue roses but I hope I'm not there when her hubby discovers I've made flowery nappies for his newborn son
I think I'd better ask first in case I cause a row

i just posted in health and beauty part of the forum about porridge oats and dry skin. the milky white stuff from the porridge has moisturising qualities. check it out maybe u could make up a solution of it by straining the porridge with boiling water to give your squishy bottle contents a moisturising  edge.  or use the method i posted in for their baths.

there is alot to be said for good old aqueous cream too and its cheap, comes in big tubs that have heaps of uses.
