Hello!
I bought a cheap fishing rod from Aldi and have a crazy urge to go catch a sea bass. Now as a complete beginner I was hoping for a couple of tips?
Where could I catch one? Would Stonehaven pier be fruitful and do I need a license or anything? Is there anywhere you can beach cast? Is there anywhere good for mackeral round here? So many questions!
Help appreciated!! |

Out of interest, how much was your cheap fishing rod? Have you spotted the info about our Neeps camping/fishing trips. We were all at Rosehearty beach casting recently - though I'm pretty sure that they only things that were caught were crabs! _________________ Neeps Flickr Group - check out some of the fab photos from other Neepsters and share some of your own. |

It was £12.99 which I thought was cheap relative to others I have seen. Hope I haven't been diddled! I figured 10 fish caught would payback!
I have seen the camping things but haven't been able to go. I'll have a look for the fishing things to see what I have missed! |

That is cheap - David just bought two and they cost more than that!! Is that including a reel? _________________ Neeps Flickr Group - check out some of the fab photos from other Neepsters and share some of your own. |

| They are telescopic rods complete with reel and line. I can't find them on the Aldi website anymore though for a piccy but I'll see if I can get more details when I get home. I doubt they are sea specific but I'll be washing them down to remove all the salt after use. |

Sounds like you have the fishing bug I heard that the fisher folk from Cullen Anglers were catching sea bass at Sandend when we went on our Rosehearty camp out. I'm sort of hoping we'll be lucky at Banff on the 20th weekend camp. We might get to visit Sandend before then for some seaweed collecting - and to put a line in. Like you I fancy pulling something out of the sea. Which reminds me of your other questions...as far as I'm aware you can fish in the sea without any type of licence...but i'm pretty sure this doesn't include where the river/sea meet as this is probably part of the river licence. As for Mackeral - SH said he'd pulled a couple out recently (think it was Pennan way??).
I get the feeling you're much further south than me though so this might not be too much help? Can you make the camp out? Even if it's for a wee while, I'm sure someone will help you turn your wanna be into a decent cast. _________________ Better late than never! |

| Cool, ta for the tips. I am further south near WG but a day trip to Pennan or Rosehearty would be great! I can't make the camp weekend but maybe in the future! |

the rod will do to learn with, god help you if you catch a bass though, i would think itll make mincemeat of your rod, worth it though just for the experience, it would make an ideal rod to carry around in the cor, for trout.
good for mackrel too never caught a bass myself, but they are supposed to be pretty strong fighters, |

| I like a good challenge, makes me feel like a proper hunter gatherer and not just a totally dominant human! I am going seatrout fishing tomorrow with a friend (all licensed and above board) and I am sooo excited! Might make a weekend of it and go sea fishing on the sunday too! |
