THOUSANDS SET TO ATTEND SLED DOG RALLY

The Cairngorm hills will soon be alive with the sound of more than 1,000 sled dogs gathering to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the famous Aviemore Sled Dog Rally.

The event has become a howling success, and this year's event on January 19 and 20 promises to be extra special.

Competitors range in age from eight to over 60 and the event attracts more than 3,000 spectators annually.

The Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain, sponsors dog food manufacturer Arden Grange, and Forest Enterprise, run the rally on forest trails around Loch Morlich, in the shadow of the Cairngorms.

The rally features teams of between two and eight sled dogs pulling sleds at up to 20mph over a challenging, four-mile track. Taking part will be Siberian huskies, Alaskan malamutes and samoyeds.

Only a dozen teams ran in the first rally in 1984, but with over 250 teams racing this year, the event is now is one of the biggest gatherings of its kind in Europe.

One of the event organisers, Steve Taylor from Cheshire said: "If we have ideal conditions there will be plenty of snow for teams to pull their driver - called the musher - around the course on a sled. If not, the musher will use a three-wheeled rig that looks a bit like a tricycle without a seat. Both dogs and musher have to be fit and many teams train all year round for this race."

I would love to do this sport. Don't think Rhodesian Ridgebacks would do well though, they would probably prefer to be in the sledge.

This is a trailer for a documentary which I am still working hard on in my now limited spare time. The documentary follows the workings of the Cairngorm Sleddog Centre in Scotland. Might post some sneak peaks of seqeuences of the documentary as it grows...so watch out
