A Taste or Traditional Wonder Foods
Steak, Kale and Ale
A popular Deeside venue is championing some traditional foods, Native Aberdeen Angus beef, Kale, the
newest of new wonder foods, and locally brewed beer. These seem to be an ideal combination, and the
public are invited to try them at Deeside Activity Park, this Sunday 9th March, from noon.
The Activity Park is owned and run by well known Aberdeen Angus breeders, Ken and Margaret Howie,
who have been butchering their own beef for a number of years, and supply it to their own restaurant.
They also have a small Farm Shop which specialises in local produce. One of the most popular lines is
Macbeth Real Ale, brewed by Rob James at Hillside, just over the hill.
Recently Kale has hit the headlines with health experts extolling its many virtues and Television chefs
finding more interesting ways to prepare it than our forefathers had. Alex Sanger from Prettycur,
Montrose grows beans, peas, broccoli and kale, and has found it very successful. “When Ken said he
was planning a Steak and Ale tasting, I thought Kale should be involved. I’ll be there, preparing Kale and
giving recipe suggestions as well as tastings. It should be great fun” said Alex.
“We’ve had food tastings before and they have been very well received. This one grew out of the fact
that we make our own steak pies using our own Aberdeen Angus beef. We also sell Macbeth Ale, and it
was suggested we put the two together for a classic dish with a very local twist, and then Alex insisted
that the Kale should be involved. Personally, I’m not that fond of the stuff, but he has vowed to convert
me to a Kale lover!!” said Ken Howie.
Macbeth Real Ale has been brewed on Deeside for over two years now and has built up a fair following.
It is a traditional beer with real taste, but not too heavy. Rob James, the brewer, enthused, “and it goes
really well in a Cairnton Aberdeen Angus Steak Pie”.
The Tasting event starts at noon at Deeside Activity Park, which is well signposted off the A93, 3 miles
east of Aboyne. Everyone is welcome and the event is free. For more details, call D.A.P. on 01339

strange. It was a press release from them, so perhaps they've just not updated their website yet.
Received it from Rob James at Hillside Brewery AND the Slow Food Aberdeenshire Convivium too. _________________ Neeps Flickr Group - check out some of the fab photos from other Neepsters and share some of your own. |

I found nothing on the website either but had an email about this from the aberdeenshire slow food group... It's just a few miles up the road so we'll pop by on Sunday and see what's going on.
