Is it possible to take a large mens' waistcoat and alter it to be a taylored ladies waistcoat? Or would it be better to start from scratch?

You could certainly make it smaller, but tailoring might not be possible.
It would involve creating a bust with darts and because of the anatomical differnces between men and women the surplus fabric simply wouldn't be there - unless you were very flat chested, which I don't think you are.
If you want anything tailored, you really do need to start from scratch.
Waistcoats are very simple to make why not give it a go.

Thanks Julie.

OK, next question: Where can I get a pattern from? Yes I would need one - not made anything tailored before.

I haven't bought a pattern for about twenty years so I don't have a clue. John Lewis have a fabric department - which might sell patterns also?
The only other thing I can suggest is tracing you one off from one of my Burda mags - there's a load of them in the 1990s issues because they were trendy then, long, short, fitted.... - but you would need to show me what style you wanted and give me your vitals. I don't have time at the moment to write down all the assembly instructions unless gordon could scan them for me sometime. He's not here at the moment - up to his eyes in wet rot and sawdust in Aberdeen. Shelly has another pub, they're replacing a load of rotten floor behind the bar. I went over there today - can't remember the name of the place of course, but it's over the road from kings fabrics and next door to a big carpet shop. Good excuse to hang out at the fabric store

I'm SOOOO unfashionable!!!

Thanks for the offer Julie, but that's an awful lot of work - I'll have a look in John Lewis to see if I can find a pattern next time I'm in Aberdeen.

I think they are making a comeback D, if you wait a while everything does. You are an individual anyway, stuff fashion. Who says a bunch of gay men in Italy and Germany should tell all the women in the world what to wear.
I quite like waistcoats, they cover the lumpy bits
