A lonely piper’s haunting tunes
from in the valley floor.
Their flowing alto melodies
are their summons to the war.
A reed-thatch covered roundhouse
and the fire’s embered glow.
They muster at the wooden bridge,
With sword and shield and bow.

The sun appears above the mist,
and lights their morning scene.
A finer band of mounted men,
There has never been.
With patterned kilt and painted face,
They ride into the glen.
They call their clans for all around,
For one man now is ten.

The trusted steeds on which they ride,
Are ready for the kill.
Dressed in mud and twisted rope,
and their riders mounted skill.
They charge towards the enemy,
Upon their sacred land.
For walking on their holy ground
they’ll kill them all by hand.

Upon the field of battle come
the lines on which they draw.
A chant of death to hated men,
To death they’ll fight a score.
With many wounded men they fight,
To blood and broken souls.
A padre holds his blessed rites
And blood stained wooden bowls.

They fall back to their homeland,
wounded riders dropping short.
They’re damaged broken bodies burnt,
no greater war they’ve fought.
Their village is at peace again
in the setting of the sun.
For once a war that must be fought
Is now a war that’s won.
