Rather than spend quite a bit on a box full of chopped canes, cut holly hock stems into small lengths, having collected the seeds, tie together with raffia or string into a bundle and hang somewhere. Free, takes few mins.

Not sure if they're hollow right through but a fair way from the ends, something can live in there. _________________ www.womblehouse.blogspot.com

That should work too. I was wondering at the time whether it would be good for lighting the fire with if dry enough. There must be loads of stuff that we clear from the garden that would light the fire as well as compost.

FMN did you see that amazing insect house in Permaculture Magazine, made up of about 6 wooden pallets stacked on top of one another, and various materials stuffed in all the gaps, including tubes and things. There was even provision for hedgehogs right at the bottom. I'm collecting pallets for one but haven't got enough of the same size yet. I LOVE pallets! I make my compost bins out of four equal-sized pallets tied at corner with baler twine.
I recently wanted ONE white plastic food bucket so asked at JGRoss in Inverurie - they gave me over 20 of them with lids. Fantastic for storing foodstuffs in, but I can only use so many!!!
I am hooked on recycling. _________________ Local food - better by far! |
