Hi. Thought I would start a new thread regarding my sister's blanket, as I can't find the original. I have had two lessons in crochet (thanks ZC!) and I'm slowly making something that looks actually presentable. Zombiecazz has already given me the first square - thank you so much! - and it is about 6" to a side.

That's a great idea PD - the squares do need to be the same size don't they so that they can be sewn up neatly at the end. Perhaps we could have a practice session on the 17th/18th March depending on which day folk are coming over.... I was thinking that we could come up with a press release and ask people from the north east to donate their bits of wool - what do you think??

I would love to have a go at crochet....any tips on where to start? I think initially I would like to do small flowers to use on my cards & Scrapbook pages. I heard that Lidl were getting some crochet kits in soon but not sure of proper details!?

Lidl are doing wool and stuff from 15th March: http://www.lidl.co.uk/uk/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20070315.index.ar11 WellyS

Needles too: http://www.lidl.co.uk/uk/home.nsf...0070315.p.Handicraft_Needles.ar11 Are there crochet needles amongst that lot? I don't know what I'm looking at . The yellow handled ones maybe? Aldi's have wool now if anyone wants some. What's the difference between wool and crochet yarn? http://www.lidl.co.uk/uk/home.nsf...070315.p.Crochet_Yarn_-_400g.ar11

Ther's lots of different things you can crochet. The yarn is probably for finer things like lacey crochet, for doilies etc

I got a leaflet from Lidl when i was there last week and they had a wee sewing machine in it for £30-35? i think.. My sister was saying that she bought the same one from Lidl's in majorca and she has raved about it saying ti did allsorts!

Unfortunately, none of the "wool" Lidl's offer is wool - it's all pure polyacryl - which I personally can't stand the feel of... The cotton is real cotton, though. Some of it is quite nice, if you know what you want. The needles and crochet hooks come in packs of two or three, so if you are lucky and find the sizes that you want (there are several sizes in each pack), it's fine. Diana, I might be able to help you out with a 3.5 crochet hook - I think that's probably the right one for the blanket, depending on how tight you crochet.

Yes please Ina. I have got a couple now, but was thinking they're too small (2.5 is the largest I think)

Hey PD - how is it going? Squares piling up yet? Any idea how many you are aiming for?

I just popped on here, Ina, to thank you for the squares ZC gave me from you last night. They are gorgeous - I am really struggling to get any done myself. I shall have to get another lesson from ZC because I am stumped.

Square 2 done.

Ina posted
Would you believe it - I have run out of wool that's suitable for the squares... All the rest of what I have is either too thick, or I still need it for a large project - and I don't want to jeopardise that by using some of it for squares and then run out of the right colour two rows from completing my jumper! So is there anybody out there who has stuff left for crochet hook 3.5? Or really thin stuff that I can double up?

Ina, if you tell me what weight of wool you want, I will go and buy you some. It is the least i can do - you have practically crocheted this whole blanket yourself between you and Caroline! I quit trying to crochet and I'm knitting my squares.
I got the recent squares, by the way, and they are fab Thank you so much for spending this time doing this. I am sure Sue will be chuffed to bits.

I've got some bits of wool here that you can look at Ina and there is the stuff that you put into the Neeps box too - not sure whether any of that is suitable??

Probably will - I'd kept some of it for myself to crochet some squares, but thought that maybe somebody else would want some, too...
PD, don't go out buying any - unless you see some cheap stuff in a charity shop. I'm sure between all of us we have enough for several blankets!

Hi Ina
Sorry to repeat a question but what weight of wool would you like the squares in as I have loads of ends of jumpers kicking about and although my crotchet leaves a lot to be desired I can knit if that is any help.

Hi Lonegranger, There isn't any specifics about weight of wool. Everyone is just doing what they have. The idea is that Sue can feel the different textures and patterns and some of the variety of colour. So it's using up any odds and ends.

Yep, that's right. PD is using knitted as well as crocheted squares. I'm using (roughly) doubleknit wool for the crocheting - mainly because my largest crochethook is 3.5mm, and if I use really chunky wool with that the squares turn out as hard as a chopping board!

PD's sister Sue is seriously ill. PD decided to crochet a blanket for her, and we are trying to help her with that - it's all explained (I hope) in this old thread:

Ok - I have eight 6" squares of crochet here that I started to make for some project or other ages ago. I found them when cleaning out my room but didn't dump them, can't believe they are the size you want. Where do I send them? _________________ Julia

Shows you it makes sense never to throw anything out... Anyway, smaller ones can easily be made larger, and larger ones - well, easy enough to reduce in size if they are crocheted in rounds, and otherwise, use the yarn to make new ones! Nothing gets wasted in a NEEPS's houshold. |
