|
|
WG and I were discussing 'things to do with children while at home' the other day. Sometimes its hard to find things to do with the little blighters especially, if you are, like us, determined to keep them away from the mind numbing effects of electronic games or tv!
Enter 'Storytelling' - since the dawn of Man on Earth, storytelling has been a way of passing down history, whiling away dark winter nights and keeping young and not so young children amused.
So, as aforementioned Dark Winter Nights and the christmas holidays are just round the corner we'd like to hear from any potential storytellers out there.
The idea is that anyone at all can submit a 'story' - a peice of writing - (between 500 and 1000 words). The subject should be ideally fictional AND traditional (avoiding if possible cartoon/tv characters, gaming characters etc) but really after that, its up to you. You can write for kids or you can write for adults (after all, we do occasionally get 5 minutes to ourselves )
Each month, a chosen peice will be featured on the NEEPS main website.
Look forward to seeing your entries!

I think this is a great idea... and don't worry folks, you don't need to be the next J K Rowling to enter. _________________ Neeps Flickr Group - check out some of the fab photos from other Neepsters and share some of your own. |

I’ll tell you a story, full of wonder and awe
A story not told since those old days of yore
It’s a tale of a pixie, and one you should heed
You’ll be glad that you did, if you’re ever in need
The tale starts with a boy, as tales often do
A poor little boy, who couldn’t tie up his shoe
And then one day, while still tugging his laces
The boy met a pixie, who had two little cases
In one case was a fiddle, and in the other a flute
While the instruments played, pixie took off a boot
He held both laces in the air, and started to sing
The boy never before, had ever seen such a thing
The pixie’s strange song, was an odd little tune
But the song was so catchy, that everso soon…
The boy sang along, and forever after he knew
How to tie up his laces, yes he knew what to do
Wrap one lace round the other, then push under and pull through
Now with both ends make two loops, first one loop then two
Twist one loop round the other, and then under and through
Pull both loops tight, and you’ve tied up your shoe !! _________________ NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF THE FORCE......... |

How lovely. Copyright noted - though too nice not to share with my little one, who is still struggling with the old laces. Do you have other 'how to's' poems for the lil' uns floating through your mind?
I can see children (and their parents) loving this. Know anyone who could help you with illustrations...or is this another talent of yours? Each stanza has a lovely image to go with it - what does the lil pixie look like - does he wear curly/sturdy/colourful boots? _________________ Better late than never! |

How about this one I dreamt up this morning, although some of my grammer should come with a warning! It's about a young bunny, all wet and cold, that remembers a lesson, even when she grows old
Two down, and 10 or so more to go I reckon.......Oh, and I need an illustrator...........anyone out there want to try a joint venture? We could insist it's published on recycled paper ?
Little bunny catches a cold
A long time ago, in a land far away
A young baby bunny was starting the day
She ran from her warren, into a morning so bright
And squeaked when she looked on fresh dew with delight
For the tiny young bunny had never seen dew
Being born in the warmth of the summer so new
The damp grass was a first for this young bunny’s eye
But with a hop and a leap, she gave it a try
Out of her hole she jumped with pure joy
She played in the dew, like her own special toy
She jumped and she twisted and turned with such glee
But soon she got dizzy and bumped into tree!
The leaves on the tree, the bump making them wiggle
Dripped heavily on bunny and made her head jiggle
For fresh dew on grass and drips from wet leaves
Can make bunnies cold, and give them a sneeze
Bunny called for her mummy, and her mummy appeared
Poor bunny had caught a small cold mummy feared
Bunny felt a bit poorly, and started to cough
Mummy knew it was because, she had left her coat off
So back to the warren, they went to get dressed
A warm hat, coat and gloves, and a warm cotton vest
With Wellington boots, mum and bunny both knew
They’d stay cosy and dry when they played in the dew.
Now bunny is older, and still remembers that day
The way she’d caught cold, when in dew she did play
And now bunny remembers, on a cold and wet morn
That hat, coat, gloves and wellies, will make sure she stays warm…
