but also not. I know it's happening but fail to take a good hard look at what I can do.

End of the Line trailer

(a 2 min watch)
Quote:
The End of the Line is a powerful film about one of the world's most disturbing problems - over-fishing. Advances in fishing technology mean whole species of wild fish are under threat and the most important stocks we eat are predicted to be in a state of collapse by 2050. The film points the finger at those most to blame, including celebrity chefs, and shows what we can do about it. This is not just a film, it is also a campaign - for sustainable consumption of fish, for marine protected areas to allow the sea to recover, and for a new ethic of responsible fishing.

I went to see the film at the Belmont Cinema in Aberdeen last night and it really was grim.  I've decided never to buy industrially fished fish ever again.  To see huge, beautiful bluefin tuna being caught in their thousands and clubbed to death was obscene.  It can only end one way, and it is so sad.

I'm in Chapel of Garioch, outside Inverurie!!!  But will take your advice and when I'm by the sea will go and speak to the small fishermen in the harbours and see if I can buy fish direct from them.  I wouldn't approach the large fishing boats in Fraserburgh or Peterhead because I feel they are as guilty of plundering the seas as anyone I saw in the film.  Trawling drags up everything from the sea floor and damages the sea bed and all the habitats for other sealife.

Me again - I'm waiting for the delivery of a fishing sit-on-top kayak and once it comes and I have had a practice I'm happy to show folk and let them have a go on it.  It is a very stable kayak, with holes for fishing rods, and 2 water-tight hatches, one for fish and one for your camera, phone, etc.  It is quite expensive, but is ideal for all the family, and can be used for wildlife watching and even surfing.  It is only 9'3" long so will fit in my van, but easy to put on a roofrack.  I have seen a photograph of someone standing on it, casting, so it IS pretty stable!  I have passed on my plastic sea kayak to my son as I was paranoid about capsizing and being trapped in it.  With the sit-on-top you just fall off and apparently it is quite easy to clamber back onto and you don't have to empty the water out.  I have justified it as I didn't have a holiday away last year and it doesn't look as though I'll have one this year!
