There was an item on the Ecologist website:
http://www.theecologist.org/green...ehind_the_label_orange_juice.html
about what is in, and what is involved in producing orange juice as a drink. Apparently there is more sugar (natural) in a glass of orange juice as there is in a glass of cola.
I've just been out to check my gooseberries (after having to keep indoors by hayfever for a month) and the bushes are loaded, despite leaf devastation by gooseberry saw fly - so I picked some and had these instead of my usual OJ. I love eating tart fruit!! They have tons of vit C in them, as do blackcurrants etc., and because of their high acid content they don't lose much of this in cooking.
Now I'll have to go out and pick the rest for the freezer, and everything else that is needing picked. _________________ Local food - better by far! |

mmm sounds lovelywe've just had a giant blackcurrant crumble with about 4 parts blackcurrant to 1 part crumble (i picked a few to many blackcurrants!). Was lovely and very tart. we had mackies strawberry ice-cream with it (Lidl didn't have the vanilla one) and the blackcurrants were so overwhelming it didn't matter it was strawberry icecream.

I have type 2 diabetes and a really serious weight problem.I avoid orange juice because,it's high sugar, high calorie, low fibre and not"squeezed fruit"as we would like to think.
In portugal farmers sell huge 5 kilo bags of oranges at the road side for 1.50 euros, straight from the trees. They sometimes are marked or odd shapes. They make the most delicious juice complete with bits. Also some supermarkets in Spain squeeze orange juice while you wait-nice but pricey.I can't resist it when it's the real thing. _________________ Don't judge a book by it's cover. |
