What a wonderful book. Brilliantly written, a mix of wry humour and tear inducing sadness, Finlay J Macdonald paints a picture of his childhood on Harris during the first half of the 1900's - Populated with folk like 'Great Aunt Rachel - built like a Churchhill tank and with a personality to match' he recounts his family's move to one of the 'new villages' and the arrival of the new school and fearsome headmistress Miss Dalbeith. It follows his families day to day lives - his father tending their 13 acres whilehis mother spun wool for Harris tweed, the births, marriages and deaths of the village and the inevitable dawning of his own manhood.
Highly recommend it.
